Understanding Forex Charges on Indian Credit Cards

What Is Forex Markup?

Every time you use your credit card for an international transaction — whether it's a ChatGPT subscription, Amazon.com purchase, or hotel booking abroad — your bank charges a forex markup on top of the Visa/Mastercard exchange rate. Most Indian cards charge 3.5% markup + 18% GST on that markup, making the effective cost ~4.13%.

How Forex Charges Are Calculated

Effective forex cost = Markup% + (Markup% × 18% GST). For a card with 3.5% markup: 3.5% + 0.63% = 4.13% effective. On ₹1 lakh spent internationally, that's ₹4,130 in hidden charges. A zero-forex card eliminates this entirely.

Which Subscriptions Incur Forex Charges?

A common misconception: Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube Premium do NOT charge forex in India — they bill in INR. Services like ChatGPT Plus ($20/mo), AWS, GitHub, Notion, and Figma are billed in USD and do incur forex markup on your card.

The bank's forex markup is the same regardless of network. However, Visa and Mastercard may use slightly different exchange rates. RuPay cards generally don't work for international transactions (except RuPay Select at some merchants).
